If you are finding yourself disillusioned with the drab monotony of your office cubicle and it's difficult to care about that hugely important fax that seems to have mislaid itself then maybe you should look into doing a nightcourse in something that is unquestionably important and in which your involvement can directly affect? The environment has become the burning issue on everyone’s lips in the last few years; no would dare enter Tesco unless armed with their trustworthy holding devices - charging 15 cent for a plastic bag has alerted more people to the protection of the environment than hundreds of EU regulations ever could have.
The need for qualified people with environmental training has never been more apparent, due to requirements to regulate and implement the increasing amounts of environmental legislation at a national and EU level. The development of various schemes and initiatives mean that there is a great demand for skilled professionals; a niche that is sure to develop further in the future. Environmental control and protection is a huge part of our social responsibility and as it is increasingly recognised that individual. Voluntary action is not sufficient; a higher emphasis is being place on organised and monitored strategies.
Even in business dealings this growth is obvious. In the past environmental policy was not in the primary focus of any organisation however with public interest concentrated towards it; businesses have been forced to respond in kind and today a good environmental performance saves money and enhances the image of a company; good news for the world around us and for anyone with qualifications and experience in the field.
There are various courses around the country available; running on a short and long term basis. For example IBEC's Environment Unit provides a Foundation Course in Environmental Management which helps managers learn about current environmental performance trends, standards and legislation. They also provide a range of in-company training courses. Conservation Volunteers Ireland (CVI) run a 10 week evening course, Practical Conservation and You which includes focus on woodland management, coastal and wildflower conservation among many other areas. Most of the universities and colleges around Ireland have environmental subjects on their course listings; some of which are offered on a part-time basis for example UCD have a Master of Applied Science (M.Appl. Sc.) a two year part-time course, which is open to graduates in Science, Engineering or Architecture, or graduates employed by local authorities, State or semi-State agencies, industry and consultants.
So if you’re interested in environmental studies to further your career, enhance your CV or simply because you are intrigued by this important and relevant topic then you are sure to find the course to meet you specific needs; good luck!
